The Nikon TC-17E II is a high quality teleconverter designed exclusively for high-end large aperture Nikkor AF-I and AF-S telephoto lenses. TC-17E II is suitable for sports, wildlife and other photography applications where extra magnification is required such as surveillance or shooting to maximize perspective compression.
The TC-17E II uses 7 elements in 4 groups to increase the focal length of compatible lenses by by 70% while preserving sharpness and contrast. All optical surfaces have Nikon's SIC (Super Integrated Coating). The multiple layers of anti-reflective coating maximize light transmission efficiency, improve color consistency, and minimize flare.
To maximize optical performance, The front optics of the TC-17E II protrude past the lens mount an actually sit just inside the mount of compatible lenses. Consequently only select large aperture telephotos with room in the lens mount area are physically compatible. Even though the TC-17E II uses a modified mount that prevents non compatible lenses form being connected, care should be taken not to damage lens elements when attempting to mount lenses.
As with all teleconverters increasing the lens focal length without increasing the aperture diameter results in less light transmitted through the lens. The 1.7X magnification results in a 1.5 f/stop loss of aperture*.
Nikon introduced the TC-17EII in 2004. Even though it's actually Nikon's first AF 1.7X teleconverter it is designated a 'II' because it's more contemporary to the TC-14EII and TC-20EII teleconverters from the 2000's than the TC-14E and TC-20E teleconverters from the 1990's.
The Nikon TC-17E II is an extremely useful accessory that provides added versatility without the weight or expense of a second lens. You may not use it for every shot but it's a super handy solution that keeps options open
